ISPA Belgium distributes the third Internet Student Paper Award (I.S.P.A)

ISPA Belgium décerne le troisième Internet Student Paper Award (I.S.P.A)

Bruxelles, le 4 décembre 2018 – ISPA, L’Association belge des fournisseurs de service Internet, a organisé pour la troisième année consécutive le prix récompensant le mémoire de fin d’étude traitant de questions liées à Internet : L’Internet Student Paper Award (I.S.P.A.). La gagnante, Theodora Firingou (KU Leuven), a été récompensée par un chèque d’une valeur de 1000€ pour son mémoire traitant de les algorithmes et the right of explanation. Le second prix a été attribué à Justine Simal (KU Leuven) pour son mémoire sur blockchain et GDPR et le troisième prix a été décerné à Laurent Miny, de l’Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) qui a écrit sur botnet détection.

ISPA Belgium reikt voor derde maal de Internet Student Paper Award (I.S.P.A) uit

Brussel, 4 december 2018 – ISPA, De Vereniging van Belgische Internet Service Providers, heeft voor de derde keer een scriptieprijs georganiseerd voor masterproeven handelend over het internet: de Internet Student Paper Award (I.S.P.A). Winnaar Theodora Firingou, afgestudeerd aan de Katholieke Universiteit van Leuven (KU Leuven) schreef haar masterproef over de praktische implementatie van “het recht op uitleg”. Gisteren werd ze tijdens een plechtigheid in Brussel beloond met een cheque van 1000 euro. De tweede prijs ging naar Justine Simal, eveneens van de KU Leuven met haar masterproef over GDPR. De derde prijs ging naar Laurent Miny van de ULB die zijn thesis schreef over botnets.

Le but de ce prix est de permettre à l’étudiant gagnant de se faire connaître auprès du secteur Internet belge et, de ce fait, attirer l’attention d’un potentiel employeur. Ce prix rappelle également l’importance qui doit être accordée au développement des connaissances académiques sur ce sujet.

Le jury de cette édition était composé de professionnels du secteur de l’internet : Professeur Hervé Jacquemin de l’UNamur, Hugo Kerschot, conseiller en digitalisation de la secrétaire d’Etat à la région Bruxelles-capitale en charge de la transition numérique, Bianca Debaets et Professeur Bruno Volckaert de l’Université de Gand. Toutes les disciplines académiques étaient éligibles, pour autant que le sujet du mémoire soit lié à l’Internet. Les étudiants qui ont envoyé leur candidature pour le prix ont étudié dans les universités francophones ou flamandes de Belgique et ont abordé des thèmes très variés allant du copyright, GDPR, blockchain, botnets, …

Le 4 décembre 2018 a eu lieu la cérémonie de remise des prix à la Fondation Universitaire qui a accueilli les participants au I.S.P.A . Les 3 meilleurs étudiants ont présenté leurs mémoires. La gagnante, Theodora a étudié à KU Leuven et y a obtenu un Master de Spécialisation en Droit de propriété intellectuelle en droits des TIC. Le mémoire récompensé a pour titre « Algorithmes expliqués : une analyse juridique et une mise en pratique du droit à l’explication? ».

Lors de la Cérémonie, la gagnante a reçu un chèque d’une valeur de 1.000 euros. La réaction de Theodora :

« En remettant le prix Internet Student Paper Award, l’Association des fournisseurs de services Internet en Belgique soutient, encourage et récompense les jeunes chercheurs dans leurs travaux. Je tiens donc à exprimer ma plus sincère gratitude à ISPA Belgium pour le premier prix pour mon mémoire sur le droit d’explication. J’ai été vraiment honorée de le recevoir et j’aimerais remercier les membres du jury. Enfin, je voudrais remercier ma promotrice, la professeure Peggy Valcke, pour tout le soutien qu’elle m’a apporté au cours de mon parcours universitaire, ainsi que Dr Jef Ausloos pour ses précieux conseils tout au long de mes recherches empiriques. »

ISPA attribuera ce prix chaque année et encourage tout étudiant en dernière année de Master et passionné du digital à postuler pour l’année académique 2018-2019.

De Internet Student Paper Award heeft als doel het onderzoek van masterstudenten over het internet in de kijker te zetten, in de eerste plaats binnen de Belgische internetsector – de potentiële werkgever van pas afgestudeerden. Daarnaast onderstreept de prijs het belang van de ontwikkeling van academische expertise over het internet.

Voor deze derde editie bestond de jury uit Professor Hervé Jacquemin (UNamur), Hugo Kerschot (Kabinet Bianca Debaets) en Professor Bruno Volckaert (UGent). De ingediende masterproeven kwamen uit verschillende academische disciplines en behandelden uiteenlopende onderwerpen, zoals GDPR, botnets, copyright,… Er werden inzendingen ontvangen van de verschillende Vlaamse, Brusselse en Waalse universiteiten.

Op 4 december 2018 werd Theodora Firingou uitgeroepen tot de winnaar van de derde editie van de Internet Student Paper Award. De drie beste studenten presenteerden eveneens hun masterproef. Theodora studeerde af aan de KU Leuven en behaalde daar een gespecialiseerde Master intellectuele eigendomsrechten en ICT recht. Tijdens de ceremonie in de prestigieuze Universitaire Stichting in Brussel ontving ze uit handen van ISPA voorzitter Henri-Jean Pollet een geldprijs van 1000 euro. Daarnaast had ze de kans haar onderzoek in meer detail te bespreken met professionals uit de internetsector. Theodora’s reactie:

‘Door de Internet Student Paper Award uit te reiken, ondersteunt de Internet Service Provider Association actief jonge wetenschappers met hun onderzoek en moedigt hen aan. Ik was echt vereerd om de prijs voor mijn thesis over ‘algoritimische transparantie en het recht op uitleg’ te ontvangen en ik betuig mijn oprechte waardering aan de juryleden. Tenslotte wil ik mijn promotor Prof. Peggy Valcke bedanken voor alle steun die ze mij heeft geboden tijdens mijn academisch parcour, evenals Dr. Jef Ausloos voor zijn waardevolle begeleiding tijdens mijn empirisch onderzoek.’

ISPA zal jaarlijks de Internet Student Paper Award uitreiken en moedigt masterstudenten met een passie voor de digitale wereld aan hun thesis in te sturen voor de volgende editie, academiejaar 2018-2019.

Internet Student Paper Award 2017: Dissertation abstracts of top 10

On the fifth of December 2017, ISPA Belgium awarded the second Internet Student Paper Award to Elise Melchior with her thesis on the regulation of blockchain. ISPA Belgium received submissions of dissertations on very diverse topics related to the internet and from Flemish, Walloon and Brussels university students. The Internet Student Paper Award hopes to highlight the research on the internet of the master students. The price also wishes to stress the importance of the development of academic knowledge regarding the internet. For these reasons ISPA Belgium wishes to share the abstracts of the top ten entries to the second Internet Student Paper Award.
