Last month, ISPA Belgium took part in a high-level panel discussion at the European Parliament, hosted by Debating Europe. The event brought together Belgian industry leaders and policymakers to discuss how new technologies can drive productivity and economic growth across Europe.

The discussion coincided with the launch of the 2024 Voices - Citizens Speak Up! report, which highlighted rising concerns among citizens about Europe's ability to compete globally in the tech sector.

The panel featured MEP Bruno Tobback, Public Policy Manager of Google Joëlle Jouret and ISPA's Head of Secretariat, Jan Feyaerts. Together, they tackled some of the most pressing challenges facing Europe's tech sector, from the need for greater investment in digital infrastructure to sharing ideas how SMEs can remain competitive in an increasingly digitalized economy.

For ISPA Belgium, a strong digital ecosystem—one with competitive tech companies and a modern digital infrastructure—is essential to driving economic growth and supporting businesses across Europe. The digital sector has already made significant investments in infrastructure, but to sustain this momentum, a stable and attractive investment climate must be maintained and reinforced. This means avoiding unnecessary regulatory and fiscal burdens, such as fragmented infrastructure taxes, which could discourage private investment.

Additionally, businesses—especially SMEs—need better support and incentives to adopt digital tools that enhance their productivity and competitiveness. Achieving this requires clear and harmonized regulations across the EU, reducing administrative complexity, and preventing gold-plating to create a more unified digital single market.

By strengthening these three pillars—investment in digital infrastructure, digital adoption, and a harmonized regulatory framework—Europe can not only reinforce its global competitiveness but also accelerate digital innovation and create an environment where businesses of all sizes can thrive.
